President Abdul Hamid on Tuesday urged the members of Bangladesh Navy to make it as one of the world’s best naval forces with their activities, efficiency and professionalism.
“We’ve been able to strengthen more the Bangladesh Navy compared to any other time despite the country’s resource constraints. I hope, you’ll make the Navy one of the best forces in the world through your activities, efficiency and professionalism,” he said. The President said this while addressing the officials and seamen of Chittagong naval region after their annual exercise. Abdul Hamid witnessed the thrilling two-hour ‘Exercise Sea Thunder 2015’ from the board of Bangladesh Naval Ship ‘Somudra Joy’ and took salute.
The aim of the exercise, which concluded on Tuesday as it began on January 13, was to ensure sovereignty over the newly achieved maritime boundary, surveillance of the sea area, safe guarding of naval bases in coastal area and safe guarding of sea resources. President Hamid reminded the members of Bangladesh Navy about their responsibilities and duties, and said Bangladesh’s sovereignty has been established on a vast area of the Bay of Bengal following the settlement of maritime disputes with Myanmar and India. Apart from giving security to the newly achieved maritime boundary, the Navy has been given the important responsibility of protecting the marine resources, such as natural gas and fisheries, he added. Abdul Hamid said the Navy always remains alert to protect the Sea Lines of Communication as the country’s 95 percent overseas trade is being carried out through the sea route.
