UNB, Dhaka :
BNP senior leader Rafiqul Islam Miah on Monday alleged that President Abdul Hamid through his remarks about the January-5 polls in his recent meeting with UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon has proved that he is representing only Awami League instead of the country’s people.
“The President has represented Awami League, not the country’s people, in the United Nations as he told its secretary general that the people of Bangladesh have accepted the January-5 election. His remark has proved that the President’s existence ends up in Awami League,” he said.
Rafiqul, also a BNP standing committee member, was addressing a roundtable titled ‘Historical Palashi Tragedy: Today’s Bangladesh’ arranged by Jatiyatabadi Desh Bachao Manush Bachao Andolon at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the city.
He said Ban Ki-moon did not believe President Abdul Hamid’s statement as he suggested him to arrange a discussion with the political parties now out of parliament.
Calling upon the government to hold a fresh election immediately to save the country, Rafiqul said, “The court declared legal the January-5 election where five percent people cast their votes.
No country is run by a court judgment, but as per people’s hopes and aspirations.”
Comparing the incidents of Mirpur Bihari Camp, Narayanganj, Feni and Lakshmipur with the historic Plassey tragedy, he said the recent killing incidents took place in the country over looting public money like that of Plassey tragedy.
Rafiqul Islam, also a BNP policymaking body member, said politicians and businessmen who are siphoning off money abroad are traitors. “The villain of the Plassey tragedy Lord Clive had been awarded death sentence. The same fate awaits those who are now siphoning off money abroad.”
Jatiyatabadi Desh Bachao Manush Bachao Andolon president KM Rakibul Islam Ripon, BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu, BNP executive committee member Md Hanif also spoke at the programme.
