State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid yesterday said all the subscribers of Power Development Board (PDB) in Chittagong region will be brought under pre-paid metre connection system.
He was addressing a views exchange meeting with the PDB’s Chittagong zonal officials, held at its office in the port city. Chittagong region has around 800,000 subscribers at present, and the yearly growth of subscribers is 10 percent, said Azharul Islam, PDB chief engineer (distribution) of Chittagong South zone.
Currently, the unrealised bills of PDB in the region stand at around Tk 400 crore, he added. Nasrul said it was the direction of the prime minister that all the PDB subscribers in the country would have to be brought under pre-paid system, because it would help balance between power generation and demand and dully realise the electricity bills.
Mentioning that the country will turn into developed one by 2041, the state minister said, “An investment worth $10 billion to $12 billion will come to this sector in future.” But he did not specify when and from where the investment will come.
He also put emphasis on creating a customer service cell and appointing expert people in that cell to deal with the subscribers’ complaints.
