Power generation reaches 11,265 MWs

The ruling government has achieved number of successes in the power sector with increased generation capacity that has reached 11,265MW.
“The government has also taken various power projects to increase power generation aimed at providing electricity to all citizens by 2021 at reasonable price,” State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid told BSS Saturday.
He said the government has set up power plants to generate 1,300MW in 2014 and around 68 per cent people have electricity access across the country. The per capita power consumption has increased to 348 kilowatt during the current tenure of the Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“The government has given top priority to the development of the sector considering its importance in the overall development of the country and taken eight projects in the distribution sector to provide 40 lakh new connections,” Hamid added.
He said the government has taken a coal based mega power plant project which has a capacity of generating 10,000MW of electricity.
According to ministry sources, the government increased the number of power plants, transmission lines and distribution lines, while the system losses have been significantly reduced.
The government installed about 9 lakh solar home systems with 40MW capacity and constructed 2,900 kilometre distribution lines, the source said.
In 2013-2014 fiscal year the government provided 11 lakh new electricity connections.
Besides, the government signed memorandum of understandings (MoUs) under government-to-government (G-to-G) with China and Malaysia for adding 3,960MW power to the national grid.
Another G-to-G MoU with South Korea is under discussion for 1,200MW, while the government is considering another MoU for generating power with Qatar under G-to-G.
