A three-day Poush Mela to celebrate the spirit of Poush, the ninth month on Bengali calendar, was held recently at the Ramna Batamul in in the city’s Suhrawardy Udyan on amid festivity.
Poush Mela Udjapon Parishad organised the fair, which featured a number of pitha (cake) stalls, discussion session and cultural programmes.
Various artistes took part in the festival to entertain the audience with their performances to mark Poush.
Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the fair as chief guest. Noted cultural activists Gomal Kuddus and Hasan Arif, noted theatre actor Jhuna Chowdhury, eminent singer Bishwajit Roy and others talked at the programme.
Artistes of Wrishijo Shilpi Goshthi presented numbers like Baajey ki modhur surey and Aji Bangladesh-er hridoy hotey in chorus.
Cultural organisation Bonhishikha depicted the diversity of the six seasons in the country through its presentation of Chhoi Writu’r E Bangladeshey, a folk number that describes unique traits of each of the seasons.
Satyen Sen Shilpy Goshthi entertained audience with Dhan katibo kocha koch, a number that revels the harvest time due in Poush.
Colourful group dance recitals were presented on the opening day.
Dancers of Nrityasree brought in a jovial ambiance through their presentation of Poush Fagun-er Pala, Nrittym artistes’ rendition of Dhan katoner moushum also entertained.
Noted artiste Bishwajit Roy pleased the audiences with his soulful presentation of legendary bard Radharaman’s popular number Bhromor koiyo giya in his tuneful voice. Among other solo performers, Shahdat Hossain Polash grabbed notice. Recitations were also done in the programme. Noted recitation artiste Rafiqul Islam presented renowned poet Sukanto Bhattacharya’s Prartthi.
About 30 stalls have been laid out in the fair that are serving various traditional pithas of the season. The stalls are also selling toys and handicrafts in the vibrant arena. The pithas sold in makeshift stalls greatly attracted visitors.
