Ports capacity, efficiency need to be improved: BGMEA

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan has underscored the need for enhancing capacity and efficiency of Chittagong Port in line with the growing international business of the country to meet the future demand of sea-borne trade.
“Improving capacity of the principal sea port will support to maintain sustainable economic growth in Bangladesh by ensuring access to the international markets,” he said while speaking during a meeting with Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Rear Admiral M Shahjahan in Chittagong on Sunday.
Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley and Ambassador of Italy to Bangladesh Enrico Nunziata were present at the meeting.
BGMEA First Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam, Vice President Shahidullah Azim, Vice President (Finance) Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, Vice President Md Nasir Uddin, Vice President Rakibul Alam Chowdhury and Directors Abdullah Hil Rakib, AM Shafiul Karim (Khokon), Md Hassan (Jacky) and M Ahsanul Hoq also attended the meeting.
The BGMEA, apex body of the apparel producers, president said the economy of Bangladesh is growing steadily as well as the volume of export-import trade.
In such context, it’s imperative to increase the capacity of the sea port to handle the increased trade flow, he said.
“It’s really encouraging that RMG exports of Bangladesh are increasing and we expect the business will continue to grow in the coming days as compliance, production quality and strength of Bangladesh has gained a trust among global buyers to supply products in all weather,” he said.
“Timely shipment of the products is very important in order to maintain the growth, which necessitates enhancing the port capacity and efficiency,” he added.
It is also important to make export-import activities quicker and smooth to retain the competitiveness of Bangladesh apparel industry in the global market.
The BGMEA leaders expressed thanks to the government for taking all the steps that have led to smooth functioning in the Chittagong Port.
They laid emphasis on continuing efforts for keeping capacity and efficiency of the Chittagong Port up to the mark.
