HC commutes sentence of three death convicts

The High Court on Sunday commuted the death sentence of three convicts awarded by a trial court to life time rigorous imprisonment in a murder case.
The High Court bench of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice A K M Zahirul Huq delivered the verdict after hearing the death references and the appeal petitions filed by the convicts against the trial court verdict.
The three convicted persons are— Md Jamir Ali alias Jaber, Md Enamul Kabir and Mintu Sheikh.
Earlier on February 9 in 2017, a Faridpur court awarded them death sentence in the case filed on charge of murdering Giasuddin Khan, a Rajbari based jute trader.
Later the convicted persons filed appeal petitions with the High Court against their sentences. At the same time, their death references came to the High Court for approval. The High Court held hearing on the appeal petitions and death references together.
Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta who appeared in the HC hearing for the state said that the court reduced the sentence considering the age of the accused at the time of the incident. A note has already been initiated to file appeal against the HC verdict in the case, said the state lawyer.
According to the case documents, Giasuddin Khan, a businessman from Mojlispur village of Basantapur union under Rajbari district, was hacked to death on October 20 in 2010 at around 8:30 pm due to previous enmity.
The convicted persons and some others brutally killed Giasuddin near Barokhada bridge at Faridpur Sadar upazila while he was returning home from Khalilpur market of Faridpur Sadar after selling jute.
On the same day, deceased’s wife Sheuli Begum filed a murder case with the Faridpur Katwali Police Station.
