Overall population of Bangladesh has stood around 16.10 crore with a birth rate at 2.3 per cent despite government’s different steps to control population, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Zahid Malik said.
“Our plan is to lower the rate to 2 per cent. Local health workers will be made more active to reach the goal,’ the Minister told a press conference at the
Ministry’s conference hall on Tuesday ahead of the ‘World Population Day’ on July 21.
The day was observed on July 11 in different countries of the world but Bangladesh will observe it on July 21 due to the Ramzan and Eid-ul-Fitr festivals, he said. The theme of the day this year is ‘Investing in Teenage Girls’.
“About 4.5 crore of our population are youth where we are emphasizing on health care for them as well as employment for both male and female in view to controlling population growth,” Zahid Malek said.
The government has already built 100 healthcare centres for the juveniles so that they can take healthcare services easily, he said.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will orgaise a programme at Osmani Smrity Auditorium in the city at 11:00am marking the day.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim will attend the programme as the chief guest.
Seven persons will be conferred the national award for their contribution in family planning and child health protection. Seven media will also be conferred the award for their contribution in the sector.
