More than 35 percent of the voters on Saturday exercised their franchise in the first four hours of polling in 53 constituencies in the fifth and penultimate phase of West Bengal’s assembly polls on Saturday.
The last phase of polling for West Bengal’s 294-member state assembly is due on May 5.
As many as 12.4 million voters in 14,642 polling stations, including 77 auxiliary booths, were eligible to decide the fate of 349 candidates contesting the 53 seats that went to polls on Saturday.
Forty-three of these contestants were female-among them Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who is contesting from
Bhowanipore assembly seat.
Pitted against her is her bete noire Deepa Das Munshi of the Congress, wife of veteran Congress leader Priya Ranjan Das Munshi and someone who has taken Mamata on in her typical acerbic style quite often.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the Trinamool candidate had trailed in this Bhowanipore constituency to BJP’s Tathagatha Ray.
