UNB, Dhaka :
Amid press reports that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia might be arrested on Wednesday as she refuses to appear before court to face trial in two graft cases, State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday said the police are to receive any court warrant for her arrest.
“The issue is different whether she’ll be arrested on Wednesday or day after today … it depends on her will whether she’ll appear at the court or not. The police are yet to receive any arrest warrant,” he said while talking to reporters at his
secretariat office. The junior minister, however, said: “All are equal in the eyes of law. The police are bound to comply with the court order.”
Asked why such delay takes place in getting the warrant one week has already passed by, Asad said sometimes it takes time.
About the report on withdrawal of police security from Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence and her political office at Gulshan, the state minister admitted in part and said security from her Gulshan residence has been withdrawn as she does not live there and security in front of her political office remained unchanged.
Asked what if Khaleda, also a former prime minister, does not appear in court, Asad said, “That will be seen in due time. But the police must act in compliance with the court order and the time will say about the execution of the arrest order.”
Asked whether Khaleda Zia will be arrested after getting the court warrant, Asad said the police will act according to its requirement.
Ruling out the apprehension of law-and-order slide after Khaldea Zia’ s arrest, the state minister said, “The programmes she has been throwing are not public interest-oriented ones….those are as anti-people ones. I don’t think people will take to the streets in protest against her arrest.”
Denying the allegation of police failure in preventing clandestine attacks during the ongoing nationwide transport blockade and hartal enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance, Asad said, “It’s not true… the situation has improved to some extent as people have come forward to assist the police in combating sniper attacks.”
About the progress of investigation into the killing of US expatriate writer and blogger Avijit Roy, the state minister said two killer-suspects have been arrested so far and hoped that they will be able to arrest the remaining culprits. “The facts behind the killing will be debunked.”
Asked whether there was any police negligence during the attack on the Avijit couple in front TSC, he said police remained on duty 100 yards off the place of occurrence as he was informed. “In fact, the police couldn’t understand the criminal operation as the victims were surrounded by the people. I won’t speak much as the matter is under investigation.”
