Parashuram (Feni) Correspondent :
The residents of Parashuram Upazila in Feni district may face an acute crisis of pure drinking water in the current summer season because of drastic fall in ground water level as necessary measures have not yet been taken to address the issue.
Department of Public Health Engineering , Parashuram officials are apprehending that around 5 lakh people of Parashuram Upazila may suffer much this summer.
Deep tube-well is the main source of pure drinking water in the largely populated Upazila. But scarcity of pure drinking water becomes serious in summer as required quantity of water cannot be lifted through deep tube-wells because of fall in ground water level.
According to the DPHE officials, ground water level has declined by 21 feet on an average in the Upazila in 2012-13 while it declined by 29 feet in 2011.
So people in most areas of the Upazila have to depend on unsafe pond water.
In sufficient rain, poor navigability and excessive use of ground water are the main reasons behind the fall in ground water level, they said.
However, Feni Water Supply and Sewerage Authority officials claimed that, there would be no scarcity of drinking water in whole of Feni district this year as they have taken some measures to face water crisis in the summer.
President of Feni Development Movement Coordination Committee said, it was not possible to resolve the water crisis depending on the ground water only.
He emphasised on setting up water treatment plant to purify river water to deal with the crisis.
