MV Shahrukh-2 plying on Barguna-Dhaka route got stuck on under water shoal of Meghna River with five hundred passengers on board on early Wednesday.
The passengers of the launch were evacuated after eight hours by MV Pubali-1, another launch of the same company and sent to Dhaka at noon.
MV Shahrukh-2 was plying on Barguna to Dhaka route and stuck on under water shoal of Meghna River at 3 am Wednesday near Kaliganj point under Mehendiganj Upazila of Barishal district.
Till this report the stuck launch was there waiting for high tide.
However around 11:00 am Wednesday after eight hours five hundred passengers of the launch were evacuated by another passenger launch of the company and sent to Dhaka, confirmed Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
MV Shahrukh-2 left Barguna Launch ghat on Tuesday evening for Dhaka and got stuck on under water shoal of Meghna River near Kaliganj under Mehendiganj upazila of Barishal at about 3:00 am Wednesday.
The captain of the vessel wrongly followed the Bhola-Dhaka route, instead of Barishal-Dhaka route, said Ajmol Huda Mithu, joint director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and Barishal River Port Officer.
BIWTA official said the vessels got stuck as they failed to follow proper route for going Dhaka.
After receiving the news they contacting Masum Khan, owner of the launch, asked to send rescue vessel and then MV Pubali-1, another launch of the same company was sent to the spot and evacuating passengers went for Dhaka, BIWTA official added.
Owner of the launch said they will investigate the cause of the incident and negligence of the captain and crews, if any.
“The launch was plying slowly in a foggy weather, and got stuck in a shoal,” said Sahidul Islam, one of the crew of the launch.
` Safe navigation has become problematic on this route in foggy weather, causing the launch to get stuck’, he claimed.
Mirza Md. Khaled, one of passenger said they feared about security at char area and faced problem due to shortage of food, water crisis.
