A youth died in custody at Paltan Model Police Station in Dhaka on Tuesday night after he was picked up from Gulistan area.
The deceased, Masud Rana (30), was a drug addict, claimed Walid Hossain, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka
Metropolitan Police.
Walid Hossain said to The New Nation that he was held with 300 pieces of yaba tablets from Gulistan area. He was an addict and got agitated at the police station as he was not getting drugs.
But Masud’s wife rehana akter denies yaba allegation.
The DC claimed adding that at one point, “Masud fell and hit his head on a wall injuring himself badly.”
Following the incident, at first, Masud was taken Central Police Hospital. Then he rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, the DC added.
“However, doctors will confirm the cause of the death,” the DC added.
Asked, the police official could not say whether there were any previous cases filed against Masud.
The cause of the death will be known once the autopsy is done, Walid also said.
DMCH police outpost in-charge Inspector Bachchu Mia said the body was sent to the DMC morgue for an autopsy.
However, Masud was apprehended along with his friend Momin.
Masud’s family said he was picked up by police from Sonargaon and was tortured to death at the police station.
His father-in-law Abdul Mannan said: “Masud was picked up by police from in front of Sinha Textiles at Kanchpur, Sonargaon, on Tuesday noon.”
“We later heard that he was in Paltan police station. I even spoke to one of the police from the police station but they did not allow me to speak to Masud. Then around 11:00pm we heard that he fell sick and was taken to DMCH.”
Masud hailed from Manikganj and worked at Faisal Steel Rerolling Mills in Kanchpur. He lived with his wife and two daughters in Kanchpur.
His family said it was a pre-planned murder by the police and demanded justice is served.
