A discussion meeting with the media personnel titled ‘Participation of male and adolescent to prevent gender-based violence against women and children’ was held in the city.
The Acid Survivor Foundation (ASF) in association with BRAC organised the programme in the office of ASF on Wednesday noon.
In the first session, was the introduction with the ASF project, activities and purpose of the media mobilization. This session was conducted by Tahmina Islam, Coordinator-Case & Patnership Management, ASF.
In this part, she tried to focus on the activity and success of the organization as the Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF) has been working from 1999 to provide medical care, legal assistance, rehabilitation,
and dignity to victims of acid violence. Besides, the work of ASF has been recognized by the international bodies like Buckingham Palace, Amnesty International, World Health Organisation (WHO), Americans for UNFPA (the United Nations Population Fund), UN Human Rights Council and the World’s Children’s Prize Foundation which is considered as children’s Nobel Prize.
Seeing the success of Bangladesh, many countries like Pakistan, India, Nepal, Cambodia and Uganda have also taken similar initiatives to combat acid violence. ASF runs a 20-bed licensed hospital specialized for acid and burn violence victims, which is fully equipped for standard burn care services including plastic and reconstructive surgery, though in a very low-resourced set up, ASF sources added.
The second session was conducted by Marium Khanom titled ‘Open Discussion on Role of Media about Prevention of Violence against Women and Children in the Current Context and identifying the challenges, barriers areas of action and recommendation’
Finally closing remarks were presented by Sarder Jahangir Hossain, Executive Director, ASF. Acid violence incidents decreased by 96 per cent in 18 years from 2002 due to stringent laws, ample media coverage and other social campaigns against this form of violence.
We are happy that the rate of acid violence incidents has been decreased massively in the recent years due to stringent laws, ample media coverage and other social campaigns including ASF against this form of violence, Sarder Jahangir said.
We also believe that in order to eradicate such violence the participation of male and adolescent is very urgent, he further added.
