Canadian Cancer Society
The Canadian cancer society has published its 5th edition – Cigarette Package Health Warnings: International Status Report, 2016 recently. Bangladesh is ranked 57 on the latest edition while the fourth edition (published in 2014), ranked Bangladesh as 110. The latest report ranks 205 countries where 152 of them are implementing the Health Warning (HW) on tobacco packs. Besides, 105 of them have made Graphical Health Warning (GHW) implementation mandatory on tobacco packets. In Bangladesh, the graphical warning is available on both sides of tobacco packs occupying 50 percent of the pack spaces. Nepal and Vanuatu has jointly ranked first position, and both of the states have implemented GHW covering 90 percent space of tobacco packets, while India and Thailand is ranked third jointly with 85 percent GHW on tobacco packets.

Though Bangladesh has stepped ahead in consideration of overall scenarios, it has long way to go comparing the South-East Asian countries, especially Nepal, India, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Notably, Bangladesh made GHW implementation, like colored image and warning on damages caused by tobacco use, compulsory covering 50 percent space of tobacco packets since March 19, 2016. However, largely the implementation scenario is poor. A recent study reveals 75 percent tobacco packets come with no GHW on them despite the GHW being an effective measure to discourage tobacco users in consuming it. In fact, the importance of GHW in Bangladesh is more as a substantial number of its population is illiterate, says a press release.
