OMS programme creating positive impact in Gaibandha

Fortified Atta selling under government’s Open Market Sale (OMS) programme continues at Gaibandha Municipality creating positive impact to the poor.
The government has been conducting the OMS programme in the municipality area for the last few months in a bid to control food prices for feeding poor at a lower price.
Department of Food sources said a total of 9 sale centers have been set up in the town where 9 tonnes of fortified Atta are being sold every day except Saturday.
Each of the consumers is allowed to purchase at best 5 kgs of rice or Atta from the center and the price of per kg of rice and atta has been fixed at TK 21, said M Alam Miah, a dealer of the department.
While visiting an OMS center at Poura Park of the town here on Monday this correspondent found that many poor men and women were purchasing atta from the outlet in long queue.
Mokshed Ali, a dweller of Gaibandha Municipality, said the programme had created positive impacts to the poor as they were purchasing atta from the OMS dealers at reasonable price fixed by the government.
He also urged the government to open more OMS outlets in other parts of the district so that the poor could purchase the staple easily from there without any trouble.
Talking to the BSS district controller of food M. Saiful Alam said the programme would continue till starting the harvest of T-Aman paddy of the current season.
Monitoring and supervising by the officials had been geared up in the district so that any dealers could not sell the OMS atta in black markets, he also said.
