‘No alternative to reading books for knowledge’

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said there is no alternative to reading books for knowledge as the attitude would pave a way to prepare an enlightened new generation.
The Education Minister said this on Monday while attending a discussion marking the world book and copyright day held at Bishwa Sahitya Kendra in the city.
Bangladesh UNESCO National Commission and Bishwa Sahitya Kendra jointly organized the programme.
The minister said with the assistance of the Bishwa Sahitya Kendra, the attitude of book reading development programme is being implemented at 12,117 educational institutes of 250 upazials in phase since 2010 under the
Secondary Education Enhancement Project (SEEP) of the Education Ministry.
Under the project, the minister said a total of 83 lakh students have got the privilege of reading books till the period of 2017.
Even, 35 lakh 67thousands books have been distributed at the libraries of different schools and Madrashas, he added.
With Bishwa Sahitya Kendra Founder and Chairman Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed in chair , the programme also was attended, among others, by Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Secondary Division M Sohrab Hossain, Bangla Academy Director General Shamsuzzaman Khan, Director General of the Secondary and Higher Secondary Department Professor Mahbubur Rahman, Bangladesh-UNESCO National Commission Secretary M Monjur Hossain, writer Anisul Haq, Bishwa Sahitya Kendra co-team leader Sharif Md Masud and Television personality
