BU students sent to jail for injuring cops, assaulting journos

Five students of Barisal University sent to jail on Thursday afternoon as accused in three cases lodged for injuring police, assaulting photo journalist and attacking restaurant. Shakhawat Hossain, Kotwali police station officer in charge, said Sub Inspector Satya Ranjan Khaskel as complainant lodged a case (no. 9) on early Thursday for attacking police and creating lawlessness. On other hand Selim Reza, camera person of Bangla Vision TV, lodged another case (no. 10) on the same night for assaulting him and damaging his camera by the same accused. Kamrul Hasan Rumi, owner of ‘Hot Plate’ restaurant, as complainant lodged third case (no. 11) for attacking and damaging his restaurant on Wednesday afternoon by the BU students in connection of sacking Sajib Hossain, one of the employees of the restaurant. In all of the three cases six to seven were accused including arrested five students of BU by-name and more than 200 unnamed, said Sub Inspector Saidul Islam, investigation officer of the cases.
Miscreants attack newspaper office in Sylhet

A journalist was injured as a group of miscreants carried out an attack on the office of a locally published newspaper at Sobhanighat in the city on Tuesday night. The injured journalist was identified as Masrur Rasel, staff reporter of the ‘Dainik Pravat Bela’. Witnesses said a group of 10 to 15 unidentified miscreants entered the office of the daily ‘Pravatbela’ around 8pm identifying themselves as students of Darus Sunnah Iakubia Madrasah, adjacent to the office, and started vandalism. At one stage, Masrur tried to stop them, which angered the hoodlums.
7 hurt as robbers attack Gazipur resort

Robbers looted cash and valuables from a resort in Bhabanipur upazila on Thursday night, leaving seven people, including two officials of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), injured. Sub-inspector of Hotorapara police camp Nazmul Haque said a gang of robbers swooped on Rajendra Eco Resort at around 2:30am. They looted Tk 20,000 and some mobile phone sets after stabbing and beating up the guests of the resort, he added. Severely injured BRTA official Ashrafuzzaman,55, was sent to Ibne Sina Hospital in Dhaka. Other injured- Nurul Islam, 50, car driver of Ashrafuzzaman, inspector of Gazipur BRTA Wazed Hossain, 52, staff of the resort Ismail, Shapan and Badrul were sent to different hospitals for treatment.
Husband gets life for killing wife in Rangpur
RANGPUR: A court here yesterday sentenced a husband to life tern rigorous imprisonment for killing his wife in Badarganj upazila of the district more than a decade ago. The court also fined the convicted person with Taka 10,000, in default, to suffer more six month jail. Additional District and Sessions Judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 of Rangpur announced the verdict this noon. According to prosecution, accused person Mizanur Rahman of village Shialbari under Badarganj upazila in the district married Golapi Begum, daughter of Abu Taleb of same area long ago. Mizanur Rahman was a drug addict and he used to torture his wife Golapi Begum frequently after the marriage. On November 1 in 2006 at night, Mizanur Rahman murdered his wife Golapi Begum and kept her body hanging with the beam in his bedroom, reports BSS.
2 held with Yaba in Narail
NARAIL:Police in a drive arrested two persons with 752 pieces of yaba tablets from Debdun area in Naragati upazila here last night.The arrested were identified as Rafiq Sheikh, 38 and Milton Sheikh, 20 of the area. Police sources said on secret information, a team of police conducted the drive and arrested them with the yaba tablets. A case was filed in this connection, reports BSS.
