One held with drug in Jamalpur
JAMALPUR: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested a drug peddler and recovered contraband heroin and Yaba tablets from his possession in Islampur Upazila of the district last night. RAB -14 officials said acting in a tip off, a team of the elite force led by Assistant Police Super, AZM Toimur Rahman, raided the Napiter Char Sarkarpara village and arrested Md Gendagul, 40, son of Abdus Samad. RAB also found 5 gram heroin and 20 pieces of Yaba tablets in his possession. A case was filed with Islampur police station, reports BSS.
Two miscreants arrested in Noakhali
NOAKHALI: Police conducted raid at Podipara village near Padipara market on Thursday night and arrested two miscreants from there. The arrested miscreants are Delwar Hossain, 28, and Tazul Islam Mohan, 22. Police recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunitions including three LG, one pistol, one pipe gun, 3 rounds ammunitions of LG, four rounds ammunitions of pistol, seven choppers, two daggers and six mobile phones from their possessions. A case was filed against them with Sonaimuri Thana in this connection. Besides, lot of cases including dacoity, arms and terrorism are pending against them with Sonaimori and Chatkhil Thana, reports BSS.
Wheat procurement drive begins in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA: Wheat procurement drive has begun in Sundarganj upazila in the district on Wednesday amid much enthusiasm to the farmers. Manjurul Islam Liton, MP, formally inaugurated the wheat procurement drive in the upazila as the chief guest and acting upazila parishad chairman Rezia Begum and UNO Abdul Hai Milton were present as the special guests. Office sources said the government has set a target to procure a total of 387 tonnes of wheat from the upazila through two purchasing centers here during the current season. The growers could sell wheat in the purchasing centres taking the certification from the local sub assistant agriculture officer and union parishad chairman, said Halimur Rahman, officer in charge of local supply depot located at upazila headquarters. Price of per kg of wheat has been fixed at taka 28, he said adding that much enthusiasm has been seen among the farmers here on the inaugural day of the wheat procurement drive, reports BSS.
6 drug smugglers held in B’Baria
BRAHMMANBARIA: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) of Bhairab camp arrested six drug peddlers from Koshba area on Wednesday night and recovered 2, 700 yaba tablets from their possession. The members of RAB detained them from Kuti-Chumohani intersection area under Koshba Thana at night and recovered 2, 700 yaba tablets, six mobile sets and one digital camera from their possession. The arrested persons are Sagar 26, Md. Yasin Arafat 25, Md. Mostafa Ahmed 35, Md. Pabel 22, Md. Shamsu Miah 37 and Jasmin 25. In their confessional statements the arrested persons said they were taking these yaba tablets to Madhabpur, Habiganj after purchasing from Cox’s Bazaar. A case was filed with Kosbha Thana in this connection, reports BSS.
Earthquake jolts Sylhet

A series of earthquakes struck Nepal today that also jolted Bangladesh including Sylhet causing people to run out of shaking multistoried buildings and shopping centres. Sylhet Meteorological Department Director Sayed Chowdhury told that. “So far, we have recorded four jolts here due to Nepal earthquake,” He said the first earthquake struck at 1.05 pm of the local time here and the epicenter was in Nepal, 611 kilometre of northwest of Bangladesh. After that earthquakes struck in phases – with magnitude 5.6 at 1.17 pm, magnitude 5.3 at 1.34 pm and magnitude 6.0 at 1.36, he said adding “the epicenter of the last three were nearby of the first epicenter,” he said. However, according to the US Geological Survey the magnitude of the first earthquake was 7.3 and the epicenter was 18 km of South East of Kordari Nepal.
