Shopkeepers send to jail for using polythene

A mobile court sentenced two shopkeepers to jail for seven days for using banned polythene bags in their shops at Sarisabari Upazila of Jamalpur on Tuesday noon. The convicts are Jinat Ali, 27, son of Abdul Gafur of Satpowa village and Abdul Halim, 22, son of Abdul Gafur of Baniazan village of Dhanbari upazila. The mobile court is headed by Upazila Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Shihab Uddin Ahmed. Executive Magistrate Shihab Uddin Ahmed confirmed the matter and said , they gave them imprisonment in accordance with Article 1 (a) of Environment Protection Act-1 (Amendment 20) for using polythene shopping bags banned by the government.
Girl Children Day observed in Goaplagnaj

The Girl Child Day was observed with a befitting manner in Gopalganj yesterday. The theme of the day was “Empowering the girl child, development of humanity”. Gopalganj Pourashava and Women’s Standing Committee on Women’s Affairs jointly organised the programme. On the occasion of the day, they brought out a colourful rally and chanting slogan. The rally paraded main road in the city. District high officials of district administration, all members of Gopalganj municipality, all community leaders of CDC, official staffs of LIUPC project and members of Urban Primary Health Care and delivery services. After rally a discussion meeting was held at municipality conference room of Gopalganj municipality. Khadija Begum, councelor, reserved seat-1 and Chairman, Women’s Standing Committee on Women’s Affairs, Gopalganj presided over the discussion meeting where Kazi Liakat Ali, Mayor,Gopalganj pourashava. Among others, Md. Zulfikar Ali Molla, member of secretary, Women’s Standing Committee on Women’s Affairs, K,G.M Mahamud and Md. Harunur Rashid, Administrative Officer of Gopalganj pourashava spoken on the occasion.
Indian bidi seized in Kanaighat

DB police seized a large quantity of Indian bidi from a truck at Dhaka Metro-T-18-7628 from Boro Chatul area of Kanaighat Thana recently. The truck was seized on the basis of secret information led by Saiful Alam, Officer-in-Charge of the District Intelligence Branch (North). However the truck driver escaped. The estimated market value of the recovered Nasir Bidi is Tk. 5,25,000.
Councillor suspended in Bogura
BOGURA: A ward councillor of Bogura municipality has been suspended as charges were pressed against him in an attempted murder case. Mostakim Rahman, also office secretary of Jubo League’s town unit, was a councillor from ward-9. Md Rezaul Islam, secretary of the municipality, said the action was taken against Mostakim as police pressed charges against him in a case filed over beating up assistant director of Bogura zone passport office Shahjahan Ali. Aslam Ali, officer in-charge of Bogura Detective Branch of police, said the passport official was hacked five months back. In the case filed over the incident, police recently submitted a charge-sheet against the councilor, reports UNB.
