5 Jamaat leaders held in Sylhet

Five local leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami were detained from Atgram area in Zakiganj upazila early Wednesday. The arrested persons are : Municipal Jamaat ameer Helal Ahmed, local UP member Azizur Rahman, Kajalshah Union Jamaat president Khalil Ahmed and secretary Jamil Ahmed, and UP leader Abul Kalam Azad. Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a drive in Atgram area around 4:00am and nabbed them when they were holding a secret meeting. Operation officer Imrul Tarek of Zakiganj Police Station said, they were accused in several cases of vandalism with the police station.
Death anniv of Hazi Muhammad Mohsin today
KHULNA: The Khulna district administration has taken elaborate programme to observe the 203rd death anniversary of noted philanthropist Hazi Muhammad Mohsin here tomorrow. Born in 1730 at Hoogly in India, Mohsin died on November 29 in 1812. The death anniversary deferred from November 29 to January 7, 2016, due to annual examinations in different school, madrasa and colleges, said an official. The decision was taken at a meeting on November 15, 2016 held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner (DC) with Nazmul Ahsan, DC of Khulna in the chair. The programme includes discussion meeting, doa mehfil, essay competition on the life and sketch of Hazi Muhasin and to unveil a book title ‘Mohiosi Nari Monnuzan Khanam, Mahatma Hazi Muhammad Mohsin and Sayedpur Trust Estate’ written by professor Md. Bazlul Karim, S M Roisuddin Ahmmad and Sayed Ashraf Ali. Hazi Muhammad Muhasin established different schools, colleges and huge charity organizations in the subcontinent including Bangladesh. Khulna divisional commissioner Md Abdus Samad is expected to attend the discussion meeting as chief guest, reports BSS.
BGB-BSF flag meet held in C’nawabganj
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: A battalion commander level flag meeting of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) was held at Raghunathpur frontier under Chapainawabganj district on Thursday. Commanding Officer of 9 battalion of BGB Lieutenant Colonel SM Abul Ehsan led the Bangladesh team while commandant of 36 battalion of BSF Satish Kumar led the Indian side. BGB sources said different issues like border firing and killing, smuggling of drugs, arms, explosives and domestic animals, women and children trafficking, illegal border crossing, ensuring border security and coordinated patrolling on border were discussed in a cordial atmosphere in the meeting, reports BSS.
AL celebrates Victory Day for Democracy in Rangpur
RANGPUR: The district and city units of Awami League (AL) here celebrated the ‘Victory Day for Democracy’ on Thursday with a fresh vow to save democracy. The district and city units of AL jointly organised a discussion here to celebrate the third anniversary of the general elections held on January 5 in 2014 as the Victory Day for Democracy. With President of city AL Shafiur Rahman Shafi in the chair, Acting President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed addressed the discussion as the chief guest. Moderated by Office Secretary of district AL Tauhidur Rahman Tutul, General Secretary of city AL Tushar Kanti Mandal, Vice-president of district AL Matiar Rahman, its Joint Secretary Mazed Ali Babul and Education and Human Welfare Affairs Secretary Jashem Bin Hossain Jummon spoke on the occasion, reports BSS.
