Youth dies falling off train roof in Narsingdi

 A young man died after falling off the roof of a train at Narsingdi rail station here early Friday.The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. GRP sources said an unidentified youth fell to the ground while travelling on the rooftop of Dhaka-bound ‘Upaban Express’ train from Sylhet around 4 am. Police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue.
BGB seizes 1 kg gold in Satkhira
SATKHIRA: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered one kilogram of gold while the item was being smuggled to India through the bordering area at Goyra Bazar in Kalaroa upazila on Thursday night. Acting on secret information, a team of BGB-38 led by Nayek Subedar Nurul Islam conducted a drive in Goyra Bazar area and recovered the one kg gold, kept in a bag at about 10:30 pm, said BGB-38 Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Shahjahan Siraj. BGB could not arrest anyone as the smugglers managed to flee sensing the presence of the border guards, reports UNB.
Drug peddler injured in police firing in Satkhira
SATKHIRA: A drug peddler was injured in police firing in Kakshiali Bridge area in Kaliganj upazila early Friday. The injured was identified as Shukur Ali, 35, son of Atier Rahman of Shoilpur village in the upazila. Golam Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, said acting on secret information that some people were carrying heroin, a patrol team of police challenged three people traveling by a motorcycle on the Satkhira-Kaliganj Highway. Sensing danger, they hurled several crude bombs towards the police team, prompting the law enforcers to fire, leaving Shukur injured.However, two associates of Shukur Ali managed to flee. Later he was rushed to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex from where he was later shifted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital reports UNB.
Boro paddy, rice procurement begins in Palashbari
GAIBANDHA: Department of Food started Boro paddy and rice procurement drive on Thursday in Palashbari upazila of the district amid much enthusiasm of the farmers and the millers. Official sources said the government has set a target to purchase a total of 405 tonnes of paddy from the farmers directly and 2,448 tonnes of rice from the millers of the upazila during the current Boro season. Local lawmaker Dr. Younus Ali Sarker formally inaugurated the procurement drive at the local supply depot (LSD) of the upazila by cutting a red tape as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, the lawmaker asked the food officials to conduct paddy and rice procurement drive as per government guidelines. He also urged the growers to sell their paddy to the local purchasing centre and sought cooperation of all to make the procurement drive a success in the upazila. Upazila food controller M. Ferdous Rafiqul Alam, officer in charge of LSD Halimur Rahman Palash, rice mills owners, farmers and journalists were present on the occasion, reports BSS.
SBMCH files counter case against attendants of dead patient for assaulting doctors

Barisal Sher- e- Bangla Medical College authority on Thursday lodged a counter case for assaulting doctors against 15 accused including 5 family members of a dead patient. Abdul Jalil, administrative officer SBMCH by the order of the SBMCH director, lodged the case with Barisal chief metropolitan magistrate court under sections 332,333,353,307,427 and 109 of penal code for creating obstacles in performing public duties, attacking, injuring, endangering life and defaming doctors. Md. Wahiduzzaman Shikdar, CMM Barisal accepting the petition ordered Kotwali police station officer in charge to submit report about the allegation after investigation. Julia Begum, wife of the dead patient Rezaul Karim, Selim Khan, Sohel Khan, Shahin Khan, Jahirul Islam Babu, brothers, cousins of the dead patient were named and 10 others remained unnamed as accused in the case lodged by hospital authourity.
Residential hotels in Sylhet run prostitution

Almost all residential hotels in Sylhet allegedly run illegal prostitution rackets with the support of law enforcers who, according to locals, conduct raids at these establishments only as an ‘eyewash’. Meanwhile, a recent intelligence report has termed the activity as a key cause behind the rise of crime in the area. Local sources have said there are around 50 residential hotels but most are not accommodated well for residing in as they harbour such activities. Many of the renowned residential hotels in the area like Hotel Mojlish, Mohanogor, Takdir Resthouse, Hotel Anando, Akib, Saimon Bording, Khan Bording, Sitara, Famus, Al Faruk and Hotel Est end Sylhet are popular prostitute homes. Jahangir Alam, a teacher of Mokan School who lives beside the Barthkhola, told that ‘It is a shame that such unsocial activities run unabated in Sylhet’.
