The National Board of Revenue (NBR), the apex authority for tax administration, has suspended an assistant tax
commissioner for allegedly helping taxpayers evade tax.
NBR chairman Md Nojibur Rahman on Sunday issued an order suspending assistant tax commissioner of Circle-103 of Tax Zone-5 Jahidul Islam, according to sources at the NBR. Tipped off, the NBR central intelligence cell (CIC) conducted a drive at the circle 103 of Tax Zone 5 on Sunday and checked the income tax files under Jahid’s disposal.
After its search, the CIC detected that Jahid was involved in tempering the income tax returns in nearly a hundred files, depriving the national exchequer of the due revenue from the taxpayers.
The NBR has taken the punitive measure against Jahid as per the Public Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1985. An NBR member said Jahid was suspended as he was found guilty in a preliminary inquiry. “The inquiry is on and the final decision will be taken on its completion,” he said.
