Navy emerge new champions in Premier Chess League

Bangladesh Navy Chess Team emerge new champions in the Walton Premier Division Chess League with unbeaten record beating Navy Junior team by straight 4-0 points in the last and final round at the Bangladesh Olympic Association media center on Thursday.
The last three years’ champions, Dhaka Mohammedan SC finished runners-up defeating Titas Club, also by straight 4-0 points in their last encounter on Thursday evening.
The senior sailors’ team comprising GM Abdullah Al-Rakib, GM Enamul Hossain, IM Minhazuddin Ahmed Sagar, FM Taibur Rahman, FM Sk Nasir Ahmed and FM Kh. Aminul Islam clinched their maiden title securing overall 16 points.
Talking to UNB after clinching the title, Navy captain Enamul Hossain Razib said: “We are very much happy to clinch the maiden title without any foreign player… we beat giant Mohammedan SC despite our weakness in the 4th board.”
Dhaka Mohammedan SC, with two Georgian grandmasters Merab Gagunashvili and Mikheil Mchedlishvili, Bangladeshi GM Ziaur Rahman, GM Niaz Murshed, IM Abu Sufian Shakil and FM Syed Mahfuzur Rahman Emon, went down to the 2nd slot bagging 14 points.
Titas Club Chess Team, comprising FM Saif Uddin Lavlu, FM Debaraj Chatterjee, Shafiq Ahmed, FM Mohammed Abdul Malek, Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan and FM Mohammad Fahad Rahman became 3rd with 10 points.
In the day’s 9th round matches, Rakib, Razib, Nasir and Amin of Navy beat Masum, Sharon, Sharif and Sagar of Navy junior team; Gagunashvili, Zia and Shakil won against Debaraj, Mostafa and Fahad while Mchedlishvili got walkover against Lavlu.
