Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Monday called upon the protesters, who took on the streets demanding reforms of quota system in government jobs, to refrain from destructive acts. He also urged all including students and teachers to meet the situation with patience.
The minister came up with the call while talking to reporters at the secretariat here, said a press release of the Education Ministry. Nahid expressed concern and condemnation over the attacks and vandalism on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor’s residence. “Legal actions will be taken against those who are involved in the incidents,” the minister said, adding that a vested quarter is instigating the incidents to attain their interests.
About the quota system, Nahid mentioned there are constitutional bindings to conserve quota in government jobs. Without required competence and merit, quota holders also could not get jobs, he added. Mentioning recent government’s clarification over the quota system, Nahid said if posts of quota are not filled in government job recruitments, remaining vacant posts would be filled up from by merit list.
