Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has claimed that the country is the home of the highest number of green factories in the world.
The sector has also world-class standards in workplace safety and exemplary strides in environmental sustainability and commitment of continued pursuance of excellence in the area of sustainability.
The BGMEA President Faruque Hassan passed the comments during a meeting with Dirk Vantyghem, Director General of the European Apparel and Textile Confederation (EURATEX) in Antwerp, Belgium on Wednesday, according to a press release.
BGMEA Vice President Miran Ali, Director Abdullah Hil Rakib and Shams Mahmud, Managing Director of Shasha Denims Ltd, among others, were present.
The discussions covered a range of issues of mutual interests related to the textile and apparel industry, its challenges and opportunities.
The BGMEA leaders shared the incredible journey of Bangladesh’s garment industry in becoming a prestigious brand in the global apparel market.
The BGMEA leaders also highlighted the success stories of Bangladesh’s RMG industry including its world-class standards in workplace safety and exemplary strides in environmental sustainability and commitment of continued pursuance of excellence in the area of sustainability. Bangladesh is the home of the highest number of green garment factories in the world, with 150 garment factories certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), they added.
The European Apparel and Textile Confederation was officially created in 1996. EURATEX member federations represent in the EU some 160,000 companies with a turnover of €162 billion, employing 1.5 million workers.
The RMG industry is now standing at a cross road of becoming the global leader, also facing growing challenges in the area of sustainability, climate change, groundwater depletion, efficiency and many more.
Green Industrialization is one of the BGMEA’s many initiatives to take the sustainability stride of the industry to the next level.
According to USGBC, 150 LEED Certified Green Garment Factories are in Bangladesh and 9 out of the world’s top 10 green garment factories are in Bangladesh. 39 out of the world’s top 100 green industrial projects are in Bangladesh and 500 more factories are in the process of getting LEED certification.
