Dewan Atiqur Rahan Ankhi, the alleged mastermind behind the attacks on the Hindu community in Brahmanbarhia’s Nasirnagar, has been freed on bail.
District Judge’s Court Police Inspector Mahbubur Rahman said the District Jail had released Ankhi on Thursday afternoon following a High Court order.
He said the High Court granted Ankhi interim bail for four weeks on Mar 22.
The inspector said errors in the case number led to the delay in freeing Ankhi, the suspended chairman of Haripur Union Parishad.
On Oct 30 last year, hundreds of houses and at least 15 temples of Hindus were vandalised and looted in Nasirnagar after a Hindu fisherman allegedly posted a photo defaming Islam on Facebook.
Several houses were torched the following month. Police arrested 122 people, including leaders of the ruling Awami League and its rival the BNP in eight cases over the attacks.
Ankhi, the alleged mastermind of the attacks, was arrested in Dhaka on Jan 5. He was quizzed in police custody several times.
