Massive resource management for haor areas emphasized

People’s representatives and experts at a national dialogue laid emphasis on comprehensive resource management and formation of separate implementation authority for development of the country’s haor region.
They said only allocation of fund could not bring any benefit until initiatives are taken for effective utilization of the resources.
All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Haor Life organized the dialogue “Seventh Five Year Plan and Haor People’s Development” in a city hotel on Thursday.
Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal spoke on the occasion as chief guest with State Minister for Labour and Employment M Mujibul Haque in the chair.
State Minister for Social Welfare Promode Mankin, MP, Ziaul Huq Mridha, MP, Afzal Hossain, MP, Dr Rustam Ali Farazi, MP, Rebeka Momin, MP, Dr Enamur Rahman, MP, Kazi Rozi, MP, Israfil Alam, MP, Abdul Wadud, MP, A K M Jahangir Hossain, Labour Secretary Mikail Shipar, Rural Development and Cooperatives Secretary Abdul Kader, noted IT personality Mustofa Jabber and Concern Worldwide Country Representative A K M Musa, among others, spoke on the occasion.
General Economic Division (GED) Member of Planning Commission Professor Dr Shamsul Alam and Director General of Bangladesh Haor and Wetland Development Board Afroza Moazzem presented separate keynote papers.
A H M Mustafa Kamal said, at this moment, the country has 24 percent poor people of which 50 percent live in the haor area. So, development of this area has to be ensured for development of the whole country, he added. Emphasizing on keeping the characteristics of haor unchanged, the planning minister said development plan should be formulated maintaining ecosystem of the areas. He urged the people’s representatives to come up with innovative and realistic development projects.
Mujibul Haque said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had formed Haor development board, but after his killing it had made defunct.
The government after assuming power again established the Bangladesh Haor and Wetland Development Board for betterment of the haor people, he added.
