Tax Fair ends: NBR earns Tk 2,130cr as revenue

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) bagged a total of Tk Tk 2129.68 crore as revenues from 2 lakh income tax payers from the weeklong tax fair across the country.

The NBR organised a closing ceremony of the fair at its Agargaon office in the city on Monday.

Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest while Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Md Abul Kalam Azad, Senior Secretary of the Public Administration Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and Senior Secretary of Finance Division Mahbub Ahmed were the special guests. NBR Chairman Md Nojibur Rahman presided over the ceremony.

The NBR organised the fair for the 7th consecutive year as an effort to expand tax net and increase revenue collection. The NBR will also observe the National Income Tax Day on November 30 this year. According to the NBR data, around 928,973 visitors received services compared to 758,000 last year and 194,598 submitted returns.

The registration of electronic taxpayer identification number (eTIN) was 36,853 compared to 15,200 last year.
The last day’s collection was Tk 401.96 crore and income tax returns were submitted by 44,608 taxpayers. A total of 151,775 people received services on the day.

Md Abdur Razzak, Chief Coordinator of the fair and member of NBR, told The New Nation that, “Availability of easy services and awareness campaigns helped the fair get huge response.”

The special feature of the fair, which attracted a huge number of people to pay income tax at the fair, was its one-stop services, registration of electronic taxpayer identification number (eTIN), submission of income tax returns and online payment facilities.

The fair was organised in divisional headquarters for all seven days and in district headquarters for four days. The fair was held in 29 upazilas for two days andf one-day mobile fair was held in 57 upazilas.

The NBR chairman said that the huge response at the fair proves that people are interested to assist the development works of the government.
