BAU Correspondent :
The administrative and research works at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have come to halt following resignation by the VC and some teachers.
BAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Rafiqul Haque resigned on April 7 on health ground although the UGC probe committee found him guilty of sexually abusing a female staff and committing irregularities in staff recruitment.
About 61 teachers of BAU have also resigned from their extra administrative posts like coordinator of higher education and research, student affairs advisor, associate students affairs advisor, proctorial body, director of BAU research system, provosts and house tutors of different residential halls.
On the other hand, officers are also observing work abstention programme, demanding the implementation of syndicate approved pay scale, increase of the retirement age from 60 to 62 and rearrangement in sequence of university diary.
Sources said, the pro-Awami League teachers under the banner of the ‘Ganotantrik Shikkhok Forum’ began agitation against VC Prof Dr Rafiqul Haque from 19 March on the charge of abusing female staff sexually and committing irregularities in recruitment of 307 staff in different positions.
As part of the protest, 61 teachers between 24 to 29 March resigned from their extra administrative posts like coordinator of higher education and research, student affairs advisor, associate students affairs advisor, proctorial body, director of BAU research system, provosts and house tutors of different residential halls.
Later, the BAU teachers association met Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on March 31 and asked him to take necessary steps. Upon their allegation, University Grants Commission (UGC) formed a five-member probe committee headed by UGC member Mohammad Mohabbat Khan to investigate the allegation. The probe committee submitted its report on Apil 6 that found the VC guilty.
Explaining the present situation, third year student Rizvy Ibney Mahmud said, “We are not being able to collect certificates, withdraw stipends and doing some other jobs due to the teachers’ resignations and officers’ work abstention programme.” He also added that some laboratories were remaining closed, hampering the research works. He asked the authorities to solve the problems as quick as possible.
