At least 11 people, including five farmers and a school girl were killed and seven others injured in separate lightning that strikes in Sunamganj, Sherpur, Mymensingh Chandpur, Gaibandha, Dinajpur and Jamalpur districts on Saturday, police and local sources said.
The victims were identified as Hari Bhakta Das 45, Abdul Qader, 18, Rasheda Begum, 40, Abdul Jalil 50, and Raju Mia, 25, hailing from Sunamganj, Marium Begum, 11 of Sherpur while Sharfat Ali, 55, in Mymensingh and Billal Hossain Gazi, 40, inhabitant of Chandpur, Narayan Robi Das, 40 of Gaibandha, Ferdous Ahmed, 40 from Dinajpur and Rubel Hossain, 16 in Jamalpur.
In Sunamganj, five persons were killed by lightning strike in Dirai and Dharmapasha upazilas in the district in the morning.
Quoting the local people, Dirai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bayes Alam said that Rashida Begum was working in the yard of her house when the lightning struck in the morning.
In the meantime, a thunderbolt struck Quader, Haribjakta, and Razu at Bhatipara village and Mahtapur village when they went to a paddy field, leaving them dead on the spot, the police official said.
On the other hand, Abdul Jalil was killed by lightning strike while he went to the paddy field around 7am, leaving him dead on the spot, said Md Hasanuzzaman, OC of Dharmapasha Thana.
In Sherpur, a schoolgirl was killed by a lightning strike at Sameshchura village in Nalitabari upazila when she was going to madrasah in the morning.
The victim was identified as Mariam Khatun, student of class VII of Sameshchura High School and daughter of Nur Hossain, said AKM Aminul Haque, OC of Nalitabari thana.
In Mymensingh, a man was killed and four others were injured by lightning strike at village Charniamat in Phulpur upazila in the afternoon when they went to the field to graze cattle.
The deceased was identified as Sharfat Ali.
However, the injured, Shirin Akhter, Ismat Ara,
Abdul Maleque and Rubel, were admitted to Phulpur Upazila Health Complex.
In Chandpur, a farmer was killed and two others were injured by lightning strike at Charpatejanpur village in Sadar upazila around 1:30pm. The victim was identified as Billal Hossain Gazi.
In Gaibandha, a thunderbolt struck Narayan Rabi Das in Sadar upazila in the morning, leaving him dead on the spot. His wife Figni Rabi Das received injuries on the spot, said Shamsul Alam, Gaibandha municipality mayor.
In Dinajpur, a thunderbolt struck a farmer when he went to work in the morning, leaving him dead on the spot. The deceased was identified as Ferdous Ahmed, said Arif Hosain, SI of Hakimpur upazila.
In Jamalpur, a thunderbolt struck youth when he went to a peddy field in the morning, leaving him dead on the spot. The deceased was identified as Rubel Hossain, son of Abdul Majid, inhabitant of Char Hatibhanga village of Dewanganj upazila, said Hatibhanga UP Chairman Abu Hanif.
