Tk 1,353cr project for edn okayed

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved seven projects, including that of promoting further ICT use in schools, worth Taka 92.43 billion.
“The project aims at making the use of ICT more time befitting at the secondary and higher secondary level,” Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told journalists in a briefing after the ECNEC meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Of the total project cost, he said, Tk 38.76 billion will be borne by the National exchequer and Tk 40.14 billion will come as project assistance.
He said that the ECNEC approved an education project for Tk 13.53 billion with an aim to make the use of ICT more time befitting at the Secondary and Higher Secondary level.
The meeting also approved Shahjalal Fertilizer Project (SFT) (second revised) with an estimated cost of Tk 9.98 billion, he said.
“The entire project amount will be provided by the Chinese government through Chinese EXIM Bank as loan what the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) will implement by June, 2018,” Mustafa Kamal said.
He said, the major aim of the fertilizer project is to build a fertilizer factory near the existing Fenchuganj Fertilizer Factory to ensure supply of fertilizer to farmers at rational price.
The Minister said that the government had planned to boost local production of to cut fertilizer import and to encourage private sector investment in this sector when some private organizations of Saudi Arabia already expressed their interest responding to the government initiative.
Of the rest of the projects, three amounted Tk over three billion each.
These include the expansion and improvement of important regional highways (Rajshahi zone) involving Tk 4.39 billion, construction of residential flats and buildings in places of abandoned houses in Chittagong city involving Tk 4.77 billion and construction of registry and sub-registry office buildings (Second phase) in different districts at a cost of Tk 3.09 billion.
The remaining approved projects were multi-sectoral programme (4th phase) to prevent women repression (Tk 1.15 billion), prevention
of erosion of the both banks of the Halda river in Hathajari and Raozan upazilas (Tk 2.12 billion) and expansion and improvement of important regional highways (Rajshahi Zone) (Tk 4.39 billion).
