BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has demanded immediate release of senior journalist Shafik Rehman. In a statement issued on Saturday afternoon, she also demanded withdrawal of all false and fabricated cases against the journalist.
Labeling his arrest as reflection of the government’s despotic attitude, the BNP chief said that the government wanted to divert people’s attention from its ‘misrule’ including killing, forced disappearance, abduction and attack on opposition men, ‘by
arresting a brave journalist like Shafik Rehman’. “He (Shafik Rehamn) has been arrested as he used to firmly write against the misrule, failures and wrongdoings of the government fearlessly. Another reason is that Shafik Rehman through his sharp write-ups has projected the regime’s anti-people, undemocratic and willful policies,” Khaleda Zia said.
The BNP chief alleged that noted journalists and editors are being arrested and tortured as part of the government’s move to gag the media. Prime Minister of the current ‘unelected government’ has been implementing her ‘grand plan’ of eliminating fearless and outspoken people by some members of law enforcement agencies, she added.
In another statement, Khaleda Zia also protested the arrest of Gazipur City Corporation Mayor MA Mannan by law enforcers from Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur on Friday night, saying the government was arresting and repressing the elected public representatives completely out of political vendetta.
She asked the government to immediately release him after withdrawing all the ‘false’ cases filed against him.
