Staff Reporter :The hearing on the review petition of Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, regarding his death sentence will be held today (Sunday).International Crimes Tribunal-2 awarded death sentence to Kamaruzzaman on May 9, 2013.The four judges of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, will hear the petition. Kamaruzzaman was sentenced to death for his involvement in the crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain will place arguments on 46 points and seek the acquittal of Kamaruzzaman, the defence counsel Advocate Shishir Munir said on Saturday. “The four judges of the Appellate Division upheld the death sentence of Kamaruzzaman by a 3-1 majority decision. Out of four judges, one judge reduced the death sentence to life imprisonment. In the hearing, we’ll stress on the points which he had mentioned in support of his judgment,” he said. Meanwhile, Shishir Munir along with four other defence lawyers met Kamaruzzaman in the prison on Sunday. The lawyers discussed different aspects of review with Kamaruzzaman and took his instruction regarding the hearing, Munir said. The other lawyers are Ehsan Abdullah Siddiq, Moshiul Alam, Motiur Rahman Akand and Muzahidul Islam Shahin.The 63-year-old submitted his appeal against the conviction with the Supreme Court on June 6, 2013. The apex court passed its verdict on November 3, 2014, upholding the capital punishment of Kamaruzzaman, but the court released the full text of judgment on February 18 this year. Kamaruzzaman moved the review petition, seeking a reassessment of the Supreme Court verdict on March 5.
