Jute farmers in Rangpur region in crisis due to lack of water

The target of jute cultivation has not been achieved in 5 districts of Rangpur region in the current season. However, as far as the cultivation has been done, the farmers are facing a crisis in rotting the jute due to the lack of necessary water. In the current season, 58 thousand 124 hectares of jute cultivation in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat Nilphamari district of Rangpur region was set. However, this time the target was not achieved and jute cultivation was done on 51 thousand 627 hectares of land.
According to the sources of the additional director’s office of the Directorate of Agricultural Extension, Rangpur, the target of jute cultivation has been set on 58 thousand 124 hectares of land in the current season in Rangpur region. This time, jute cultivation has been done on 51 thousand 627 hectares of land without achieving that target. Out of this, 9 thousand 255 hectares in Rangpur, 15 thousand hectares in Gaibandha, 16 thousand 577 hectares in Kurigram, 4 thousand 85 hectares in Lalmonirhat and 6 thousand 710 hectares in Nilphamari district have been cultivated in Desi, Tosha, Mesta and Kenaf varieties. Sources from the Directorate of Agricultural Extension hope that if the cultivation is successful, 6 lakh 2 thousand bales of jute will be produced in these jute fields this year.

Abdul Aziz, a farmer of Pirgacha upazila of the district, said that he spent 25,500 taka for jute seeds, irrigation, fertilizers, pesticides and labor on one acre of his land. He hopes that if he takes proper care including jute rotting, he will get good profit. Mizanur Rahman, a farmer of Gangachara Upazila, said that the yield of jute this time is better than last time. Farmer Tajul Mia said, this time seeing the jute field is full of heart. But when I think about cutting jute, tears come to my eyes because of the rotting of jute due to lack of water.
