Staff Reporter :Former Chief Justice Mustafa Kamal is no more. He died of heart attack at his Gulshan residence in the city at around 3:00am on Monday. He was 81.He left behind three daughters, including Dhaka University teacher Dr Nashid Kamal, and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.The judges of Supreme Court’s Appellate Division came down from the courtroom as a mark of respect soon after the death news of Justice Kamal spread. He served as Chief Justice of Bangladesh from June to December in 1999.The funeral prayers of Mustafa Kamal were held at the Supreme Court premises at noon. Several renowned persons, including incumbent Chief Justice Muzammel Hossain, former Acting President Jamiruddin Sircar, President of Supreme Court Bar Association Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, AWami League leader Barrister Amir-Ul Islam, general secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, among others were present there. The former Chief Justice was laid to rest at Azimpur graveyard after his second Namaz-e-Janaza in Gulshan’s Azad Mosque at around 2:00pm.Mostafa Kamal, son of famous folk singer Abbas Uddin Ahmed, was born on December 30, 1934 at Kuchbihar of India in a dignified family. He was the elder brother of famous singers Ferdausi Rahman and Mustafa Jaman Abbasi. The name Mustafa Kamal, was chosen for him by national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.Kamal stood 7th in order of merit in the Matriculation examination from the Dhaka Collegiate School in 1948. He also secured 5th position in the Intermediate [Arts] Examination from Jagannath College in 1950. He obtained B.A. [Hons.] and M.A. degrees in Political Science from the University of Dhaka in 1953 and 1954 respectively securing 1st position in the 1st class.He completed M.Sc. [Economics] in Political Science from the London School of Economics and Political Science by availing of a merit scholarship for higher studies from the Government of the then Pakistan.He completed the Bar-at-Law and was called to the Bar from the Hon’ble Society of Lincoln’s Inn in 1959. Justice Mustafa Kamal was appointed Chairman of the Law Commission on December 6, 2004.
