The Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration suspended a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), university unit on the charge of assaulting a teacher.
The decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the disciplinary committee held on Saturday night presided over by the newly appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr MA Matin.
The accused identified as Md Mamun Khan, student of Urban and Regional Planning Department, humiliated Associate Professor Golam Moinuddin, who is the Chairman of the same
department, in front of the Social Science Building at about 4:30pm on Thursday. Mamun is also the Publication Secretary of BCL, JU unit.
According to the decision, the JU administration served a show-cause notice on the accused directing to explain within 48 hours as to why did he assault Professor Mohiuddin? The committee agreed with a decision of filing a case against him in two or three days.
Apart from the above, the committee declared Mamun persona non grata on the JU campus, pending a final decision to be taken in a syndicate meeting on a convenient date, confirmed Proctor Dr Mujibur Rahman.
Witness Professor Shazedur Rahman said, Mamun threatened to kill some of the professors who protested the untoward incident.
After the incident, Prof Moinuddin filed a written complaint with the JU Proctor against Mamun, seeking justice.
Sources said that Mamun’s disqualification from attending the Masters examination was the foundation of the ugly incident. He verbally requested Prof Mohiuddin to allow him to appear in the examination under special consideration. But as it was out of regulation, the request could not be considered.
Sources further said that the JU authority apathy to Mamun and his friends’ locking of two collapsible gates of the department made him desperate.
However, when contacted, JU BCL President Mahmudur Rahman said, we would accept the decision of the administration in the interest of discipline and justice.
