UNB, Dhaka :
The number of students at Jagannath University has increased over the years, but the transport facilities were not increased, causing unbearable sufferings to the students.
The university has no dormitories for the students. There are about 19,000 students studying in the university at present who reside different places
in the capital. This large number of students fully depends on university buses where only 2000 students can avail transport facilities as there are only 27 buses in the transport fleet.
These 27 buses ply on 16 different routes everyday across Dhaka and adjacent areas. Of them, 10 for teachers, two are out of order and 12 double decker buses have been hired from Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), according to transport office.
Moreover, there is no separate buses for female students who sometime face embarrassing situation while travelling with fellow males. In each semester, students have to pay Tk 200 for transport service which totals more than Tk one crore. Students staged demonstration programmes many times demanding for double shift classes as well as to arrange more buses for students, but the authority rolled out only new night-course. Often, risking lives, many students come to campus by hanging with cliff of bus-door but the authorities are not aware of the miseries, a student said.
Meanwhile, in a bid to ease students’ sufferings, the university authorities on Tuesday added three new buses to its fleet. “We know that the students are going through serious transport crisis. In a bid to ease this crisis, we included 3 new buses to the transport pool,” said JnU Vice-chancellor Dr Mizanur Rahman while inaugurating the buses at the campus.
