Jamuna erosion renders hundreds homeless in Sirajganj

Erosion by the Jamuna River in Kazipur upazila has taken a serious turn, rendering several hundred residents of ten villages under Khasrajbari and Juktigaccha unions, homeless in the last two weeks.
During a recent visit to the erosion-affected areas, this UNB correspondent found that some 200 dwelling houses and crops lands have already been washed away by the river.
Fazlul Haq, a farmer of Maijbari village, said he had to cut down his young wheat plants from his land due to the untimely erosion.
Habibur Rahman, a resident of Dhekuria village, said he took shelter in Mollikpara Juktigaccha char as the mighty river had devoured all his belongings three or fours years back. He had been affected by river erosion five times in his life.
Golam Rabbani, chairman of Khasrajbari union parishad, said local people have been such erosion in the dry season for the first time.
The erosion has taken a serious turn as a char emerged in the middle of the river on the eastern side, he said.
Local people blamed ‘dishonest’ contractors and WDB officials for their insincerity and negligence in checking erosion on the eastern bank of the Jamuna river.
Syed Hasan Imam, executive engineer of local Water Development Board, said 16 package proposal has been sent to the ministry for checking river erosion from Sirajganj to Kazipur. Already the work on seven packages is nearing completion and the work for the rest nine packages will start after getting allocation.
 Industrial park costing Tk 628 cr to be set up
The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) will soon start the construction work of an industrial park on 400 acares of land at Saydabad in sadar upazila here, aiming to boost investment and create employment in the northern districts of the country.
As the construction work will start from April local BSCIC officers are hopeful that it will be completed by the end of June, 2019.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has already approved the project.
After the construction of Bangabandhu bridge over the Jamuna river, Sirajganj has gained more importance and become an attraction for the investors due to the developed communication system, said Saidur Rahman Bacchu, former senior vice-president of Sirajganj Chamber of Commerce.
Lake, police camp, administrative zone and modern health care centre will be constructed in the park on 10 acares land under the project.
Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP), Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) and dumping ground will also be installed in the park to prevent environmental pollution, BSCIC officials said.
Abdul Kader, Monitoring Officer of Sirajganj BSCIC Industrial Area, said, around Tk 100 crore has so far been spent on the project and once completed this industrial park will create employment for about one lakh people.
