Jamaat leader killed in ‘gunfight’

A local leader of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Bandar village in Shashan ghat area of Sadar uapzila early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Tarique Mohammad Saiful Islam, 35, assistant secretary of Meherpur district unit Jamaat.
Reazul Islam, officer-in-charge of Meherpur Police Station, said Tarique was arrested from an Islami Bank branch in the town on Sunday afternoon.
Later, police along with Tarique conducted a drive in the area at about 2:30am on Monday to arrest Abdul Matin, a Khulna district unit leader of Jamaat.
Sensing the presence of police, a group of Jamaat-Shibir activists fired
gunshots at the law enforcers, triggering a gunfight that left Tarique injured with bullets.
Severely injured, Tarique was rushed to Meherpur General Hospital where doctors declared him dead at 2:45am. Police also recovered firearms and crude bombs from the spot.
Police sources said Tarique had several cases filed against him for tree felling in the area and obstructing police from performing duty during the opposition’s recent hartal and blockade programmes.
