 The second day of the 48-hour non-stop nationwide 3rd phase hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) protesting death penalty Jamaat leaders Motiur Rahman Nizami, Mir Quashem Ali and Kamruzzaman for committing crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation was observed amid poor response.
International Crimes Tribunal announced verdict of death penalty to Jamaat Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami, Badar Commander Mir Kasem Ali on Wednesday , Sunday last while the supreme court appeallate division declared verdict on Jamaat Asstt. Secretary general Kamruzzaman staying the death penalty order of ICT on Monday.
City life was as usual like other working days and no untoward incident was reported in Chittagong district including the port city during the hartal hours called by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam on Wednesday and Thursday protesting the verdict of war criminal Mir Quasem Ali and Kamruzzaman. .
The government and non-government offices, business oragnisations, factories, industries, educational institutions and other bodies continued their operations however, the pace of their respective activities was not seen during the hartal hours like other working days. Presence of vehicles on city roads was as usual and rail communication was undisrupted. The inter-district buses on three highways not seen plying except light vehicles.
The hartal supporters attempted to bring out brisk processions at different areas of the city. However, they could not picket due to the strong vigilance of law enforcing agencies.Jamaat-Shibir men set tires on fire in the city’s Access Road area early in the morning and brought out a procession while police foiled down their picketing, said Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner (West) Tanvir Arafat.Besides, anti-hartal supporters were also seen in different points of the city.
Awami league and its front organizations brought out anti-hartal procession in each city wards in the morning hours of the day.
 Members of Border Guard Bangladesh, additional police forces were deployed in the city’s important points while regular forces of police stations were also in alert to face any untoward situation, CMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operation) Banaz Kumar Majumder said.Superintendent of Police AKM Hafiz Akhter of Chittagong district said they kept strong vigilance on Dhaka-Chittagong, Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong- Rangamati Highways so that the protesters could not block the important highways which connect the business capital with other parts of the country.
All posh markets in the city except kitchen markets remained closed during hartal hours. Court proceeding hampered largely except official works , a court sources said. The famous business hub of the country Khatungonj, Chaktai where deals most of the essential commodities wholesale trading worstly affected during hartal hours, said Secretary of Khatungonj Trade Association Sagir Ahmed.
The port activities remained as usual in the inner and outer berths but the delivery of cargos restored with limited volumes. . Police said traffic on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar road, too, was normal.. Metropolitan police sources said a total of three thousand police forces including regular forces have been deployed in the city beside the 6 platoons of BGB forces to keep the law and order stable in the city. Station Manager of Chittagong Rail station Abul Kalam Azad told that all trains leave station as per schedule . Private educational institutions remained closed yesterday .
Following the verdict of ICT and supreme court appellate division, Jamaat called hartal for Wednesday and Thursday. Earlier Jamat also called 72 hours hartal on Thursday, Sunday and Monday last protesting death sentence to Motiur Rahman Nizami.
