Ishwardi floods damage crops over Tk 24cr

Floods and heavy rains in Ishwardi have damaged crops worth Tk 24.5 crore. Meanwhile, the water level of the Padma River has decreased but the suffering of the people trapped in the water has not decreased. According to the meteorological office, 122 mm of rain fell in two and a half hours on Thursday afternoon. Earlier, it rained almost the same amount on Wednesday night. Crop and vegetable lands have been inundated with record amount of heavy rains this year.
Meanwhile, water has started receding from the flood-hit areas as it has been declining since August 22. Even though water was flowing from the locality, the suffering of the water-logged people did not abate. Hundreds of families in Molla Para of Char Bilbamani Mouza crossed the river in boats with cattle and moved here. They could not return home as the water had not yet receded. They are in trouble with cattle. Due to the lack of cattle food, their suffering is increasing.
According to the Upazila Agriculture Extension Department, the low-lying areas of Ishwardi have been inundated by floods and heavy rains in the last few days. Due to the increase in the water level of the river Padma, water enters the crop lands in partial areas of Laxikunda, Sara and Pakshi Union of the upazila and causes severe damage to the crops. The dam overflows through the low-lying area on the left bank of the Padma River and enters the local and crop lands. Water enters radish, banana, masakalai, sweet pumpkin and karla fields of Kamalpur, Bilkada and Charkur-Lia villages of Laxmikunda union.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Krishibid Abdul Latif said 928 hectares of land in Pakshi, Laxmikunda and Sandra Unions of Aishwarya Upazila had suffered the most damage from chillies, vegetables and spices. According to official estimates, the value of which is 24 crore 50 lakh taka.
