Int’l folklore workshop begins at Bangla Academy

 A seven-day long international folklore workshop titled the ‘Second Folklore Summer School’ , began on Monday at Abdul Karim Shahityabisharod Auditorium on the Bangla Academy premises.
 Minister for Cultural Affairs Asaduzzaman Nur, MP, as the chief guest of the programme inaugurated the workshop organised by the Bangla Academy.

Bangla Academy delivered the inaugural speech, while Shahida Khatun, Director of the Academy’s Folklore, museum and record keeping division, gave the opening speech on folklore summer school.
Dr. Firoz Mahmud presented the key-note paper on the topic under caption,’ Folklore and History of Bangladesh’. The inauguration program was presided by President of Bangla Academy, Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman. Around 15 local and international students are participating in the workshop.
In her opening speech, Shahida Khatun said, “Bangla Academy is organizing the folklore summer school for the second time. We are hopeful that the young researchers on folklore will be able to add a new direction in their research work with the inauguration of this international folklore workshop.”
In his welcome speech, Shamsuzzaman Khan said, ‘Bangla Academy has been the pioneers of folklore culture in the country for many years now. Some positive signs are already visible which are due to our continuous efforts. At present, folklore has been recognized as a new department in different universities of the country.’
 He said, “Still, we have to walk many miles to establish folklore culture to the international level. Along with theoretical research, field work has given completion to folklore culture in Bangladesh. Keeping this target in mind, Bangla Academy has organized the folklore summer school.”
Among the guests of honours, Professor Johorlal from India, folklore specialist, Dr. Lianez Amarakirti from Sri Lanka, and Professor Tulasi Dewasa from Nepal, were present.
The foreign guests in the program mentioned Bangladesh as a remarkable example of folklore culture in the world. “Folklore does not exist in books alone in Bangladesh, the people of the nation are also leading a life enriched with folklore culture. Bangladesh is now a hot topic of discussion worldwide for its folklore culture. Bangla Academy of Bangladesh is playing an important role in this regard,” the foreign guests viewed.
They all acknowledged Bangladesh as the leader of folklore culture in South East Asia. They further commented that Bangladesh should have an International Research Institute on folklore for future development of this sector.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Nur said that the government would soon open a Folklore Institute in the country to do research on life and cultural diversity’.
He said, ‘ Pahela Baishakh, book fair on the occasion of Ekushey February and a huge cultural workshop are documents of the flow of folklore culture in this country. The folklore summer school of Bangla Academy would show a new path of research for the researchers .’
The Minister said,’ Bangla Academy has maintained the continuity of folklore research. A bridge has to be formed between folklore culture of present time and the rich history of Bengal in the past by regularly arranging such workshops and re- publication of ancient Dhrupodi books.’
Among others present in the inauguration ceremony were, Researcher Jamil Chowdhury, Poet Asad Chowdhury, Ramendu Majumder, Dr. Niaz Zaman and Azizur Rahman Aziz, Chairman of Trustee Board of National Museum.
