The civil society leaders and experts on Friday urged the government to take a coordinated effort to fight against dengue outbreak effectively.
“Tackling dengue requires a coordinated effort among the residents, authorities and stakeholders,” Prof. Dr. S. Tahmina, Director Diseases Control, told The New Nation on Friday.
As an example, she said, a homeowner and tenant must clean their homes and removed any potential mosquito-breeding site. On the other hand, the city corporations should also search-and-destroy the mosquito breeding grounds to eradicate the virus from the capital.
“It is vital for people to understand the dengue, which is preventable. So, the authorities should take a massive community outreach programme to deal with the dengue emergency,” she added.
When asked, Prof. Tahmina said, “Both the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus species of mosquito carry the dengue virus. But Aedes aegypti is more dangerous because they can fly a distance of 400m radius, whereas the Aedes albopictus that thrives on card
outdoors can only fly 80m. So, people are not safe indoors or outdoors.”
The country had seen a steep increase in the number of dengue cases since June this year, with the upward trend is still continuing.
More than 19,000 people are being infected with the dengue as of Thursday. Most of the dengue cases were reported in capital Dhaka and the city hospitals are now struggling to deal with the rising number of dengue patients.
“We should take a united effort immediately to control the dengue disease,” Architect Mobashsher Hossain, a good governance campaigner and civil society leader, told The New Nation.
He said the dengue outbreak has already engulfed the country posing a serous health risks for the people. “Although the mosquito-borne disease takes an alarming turn, we are involved in blame game, which is very unfortunate,” he added.
He said, “We have enough of blame game. Now, it is time for work to eradicate the dengue.”
Mobashsher Hossain further said that the authorities, citizens and political parties should take joint effort to control the Aedes mosquito outbreak.
“We expect prompt action from city authorities as the dengue situation is getting worsening in Dhaka. The corporations should import effective repellent to destroy the mosquito-breeding sites in the capital.”
He also suggested the city authorities to team up with private companies to organise awareness programmes for inspiring communities work together.
“The community involvement is a must to eradicate dengue,” he added.
Meanwhile, the authorities are mulling to import ‘Malathion’ insecticide to fight against Aedes aegypti, a vector of dengue virus.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Friday said that the sample of effective insecticide for controlling of Aedes mosquito will be brought from abroad within a day or two.
