Public health faces threat: Influential persons piled urea beside Khulna Railway Colony

Some influential persons have piled Urea fertilizer beside Khulna Railway Colony and as such children and elderly men have become sick for its bad smell. Due to dumping urea in Railway colony, the environment has been polluted in the meantime. Besides, some inhabitants of the colony have been suffering from different diseases including pimples and Asphyxia.
Some Staffs of Khulna Railway said, more than two hundreds quarters of Railway are available in the Ghat area. Somebody built houses in front of the colony and they have also given lodgers to those houses. Around 2500 families have been living in the Railway colony. But it is a matter of great that leaders of ghat labor union have piled urea fertilizer a month ago in the colony. Due to rainfall, fertilizer have melted and as result, bad smell has scattered in the locality.
Recently on a spot visit, this Correspondent found that beside the rail tracks, urea fertilizers were piled in the Railway colony. Bad smell were spreading in the area. It is really impossible to move beside the Railway colony.
Inhabitant of the colony Abdur Rahim said, we have informed about our sufferings to the local councilor a few days ago, but no step was taken till.
Monoara Begum, another resident of the colony said, we’re in much difficulties here, pimples attacked upon our legs and bodies. Children and elderly men of this colony have been suffering much, She added.
On condition of anonymity, some residents of the colony said, so far our knowledge go, there is no rule for dumping fertilizers in the locality , but in stead of keeping fertilizers in go-downs , some influential persons including transport contractors and leaders of the workers’ union have piled it in the colony adjacent to their houses with a view to save their costs. They have bringing the common people to health threat only for their own profit. Besides, since the fertilizers were piled in an open place, cattle eat it and ultimately they die.
21 No. Ward Councilor Samsuzzaman Mia Swapon said, on Wednesday a cow died and thereafter I have instructed to remove the fertilizers from the Railway Colony.
Md. Hafizur Rahman, sub-assistant Engineer of Khulna Railway station who is also in the charge of monitoring the railway quarters said, Urea fertilizers have also been piled in front of my office, I asked to remove several times but nobody pay any heed to it.
Contractor Md. Ismayeel Hossain said, we have sought for rail wagons and since the wagons were not given we have compelled to keep fertilizers beside the Railway tracks for easy movement. When we will get wagons, the fertilizers would be removed from the Railway colony, he added.
