Illegal billboards set up outrageously all across the Sylhet city pose a constant death threat to the city dwellers.
Sources at Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) said more than 60 percent of the total billboards in the city are illegal and installed without proper safety measures.
There is allegation that a section of unscrupulous officials of the SCC in connivance with influential have been interested in facilitating illegal billboard business.
The law enforcement agencies appear helpless in removing those illegal billboards due to pressure from politically influential quarters.
Sources said illegal billboards, which were installed without proper safety measures, are posing serious risks of fatal accidents, particularly during storms.
Moreover, different government agencies and private building owners have rented out spaces and rooftops for billboards without permission from the authorities concerned.
Most of the unauthorised billboards were erected on the streets and rooftops at Bondar bazar,Zinda bazar, Ambarkhana,Mira bazar areas.
A SCC official, seeking anonymity, said, “They could not conduct drives to pull down the illegal billboards due to lack of logistics, manpower and pressure from certain quarters”
