Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano has expressed deep satisfaction over the safety measures and other facilities at Rooppur nuclear power plant.
Referring to his visit to Rooppur power plant,
Amano said Bangladesh is in the ‘right direction’ as far as the IAEA safeguards for nuclear power plant are concerned. The IAEA Director General met Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at the latter’s office on Tuesday and discussed the issue elaborately.
He highly praised Bangladesh, particularly the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, for her strong political commitment to nuclear disarmament and peaceful use of nuclear energy.
During the meeting, Amano commended Bangladesh for its initiatives in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy and assured of IAEA’s continued support to the Rooppur nuclear power project.
DG Amano also lauded the Prime Minister for garnering wider public acceptance to the nuclear power project, and advised that the nuclear regularity authority in Bangladesh should be strengthened.
He assured the Foreign Minister that the IAEA will consider Bangladesh as a priority country and continue to provide it with necessary technical and advisory supports in implementation of the Rooppur power project.
In response to the request of the Foreign Minister, DG Amano pledged to send regular inspection teams to the Rooppur plant.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Ali apprised him of Bangladesh’s steady economic development and growing demand for energy and power.
He informed the DG that in line with Bangladesh’s strict adherence to international regime on nuclear energy, the government has recently accepted the Amendment to the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials (CPPNM). The Foreign Minister handed a copy of the Instrument of Acceptance to the DG (IAEA).
While accepting the instrument, Amano expressed great satisfaction over Bangladesh’s action and said this testifies the sincerity and commitment of Bangladesh towards nuclear safety. This is the second visit of Amano to Bangladesh as Director General of IAEA and he will leave Dhaka on today, according to Foreign Ministry here.
