A Biman Bangladesh Airlines official has been arrested after 106 kilograms of contraband gold was found abandoned in an aircraft’s toilet at Dhaka’s Shahjalal airport. The Biman flight had arrived with passengers from Dubai at 9am on Saturday. Customs officials said the gold was recovered around 2 PM. Customs Deputy Director Mostafizur Rahman identified the detained official as Biman’s mechanical assistant ‘Anisuzzaman’. His mobile phone has been seized. “Anisuzzaman has admitted of his involvement with the smuggling of gold,” Rahman told bdnews24.com. But is was not clear why a such a huge quantity of gold was left behind in the toilet. Customs officials suspect those who brought the gold on the Biman flight could well be planning to take it out with the help of somebody on the airport staff who enjoyed access to the aircrafts. Recently some cleaners have been arrested by Customs when they were found with gold. It was however a mystery how such a huge quantity of gold could get past the airport security scan at Dubai. — bdnews24.com
