Over 48,000 hectares of Transplant Aman paddy remained inundated for about 2 weeks, causing a huge crop loss in the Sylhet region.
The possibility of recouping the loss is almost nil, even if the rains come to a halt within days, a number of farmers apprehend.
Excessive rains, coupled with rolling down of water from the upstream of the Indian territory during the last 2 weeks have already inundated the cropland in the 4 districts, said the Deputy Director at the Sylhet divisional office of DAE Md. Mamunur Rashid Sunday.
Of the 108,240 hectares of land, where Transplant Aman was cultivated in Sylhet district, 28,280 hectares were now inundated, officials informed. In Moulvibazar 1,037 hectares had already been inundated out of the total 88,240 hectares while in Habiganj district, the crop on 2,070 hectares had gone under water out of the total 53,830 hectares.
In Sunamganj district, 16,515 hectraes of Transplant Aman remained under water as yet against the total 40,175 hectares, the official added.
Abdul Mannan, a farmer from Golapganj upazila said this afternoon, there is no hope to saving the crop as I had cultivated paddy this season on about 12 kiar (4 hectares) land. It would be hard to replanting on the lands even if it stops raining in 3 or 4 days, he apprehended.
However, the officials said many of the farmers would be able to collect Aman plants from alternative sources. “We would have to wait for a few days more to improve the weather,” he said and added, “We would survey on the crop loss after cessation of rains.
