A total 3,752 acres of railway land is under illegal occupation.
Railway Minister Mazibul Haque on Wednesday told it in the Parliament.
“Bangladesh Railway has recovered 169 acres of grabbed land in between July 2016 and May 2017,” Mazibul Haque said while replying a question of Awami League MP Sukumar Ranjan Ghosh.
The minister said that the eviction of illegal structures on the grabbed land is a continuous process and the railway with the help of local administration and law enforcers is conducting drive to recover the lands.
Replaying another question of Awami League MP Nurul Islam Sujan, he said that 10,843 acres of land owned by the railway remain unused.
He said that the Railway has plan to construct modern hospitals, medical colleges, five-star hotel-cum-commercial buildings and multistoried shopping mall-cum-guest houses on its unused lands.
The minister said that the planned construction works will be completed under public private partnership as per a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office on January 18, 2012 on development of railways.
“Initiatives are on to build a five-star hotel on the Zakir Hossain Road in Chittagong, a medical college and a nursing institute on railway’s land in addition to setting up of Chittagong Railway Hospital and a shopping complex -cum-guesthouse in Chittagong and Khulna,” the minister said.
